The Duke of Edinburgh´s Award

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is a voluntary self-improvement programme supporting personality development and leisure-time activities for young people between the ages of 14 and 25.

Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh and husband of Queen Elizabeth II, established the Programme in 1956. Since then, almost 5 million young people from over 100 countries have taken part. The Programme's philosophy is based on the ideas of Kurt Hahn, a German educator who understood and empathised with teenagers and sought to provide them with good advice.

The Programme's principles consist of positive direction and sensitive motivation for young people who, within a given set of rules, pursue their own personal goals as set by themselves.
